Movie Review: "Dil to Bacha Hai ji"

By Nikki Rattan (gr). „Dil to Bacha Hai ji“ is a Madhur Bhandkhar movie that reflects  people’s dream versus reality. The movie which was released in 2011 is based on the changing role of women from 1900s to now. The famous Nikki Narang (Shruti Haasan) is a typical 21st century woman. Relationships  in her life come and go. There are no hang ups.

Nikki likes to be  popular, is outgoing, lives for a cause and is often seen in cafes with friends. In fact makes her short term boyfriend Abhay Suri (Emraan  Hashmi) donate some blood for the needy. No doubt Abhay meets his fate when she dumps him. Few songs sung, some fun does not mean a life long commitment to her. He leaves a relationship through which he gets  material comfort with her step mother Anushka Narang (Tisca Chopra) to be with Nikki but alas she isn’t the type who believes in long term relations and is busy with her career as a leading fashion designer. A typical gym trainer who trains and falls in love with someone older, ex-Miss India, Anushka, married to a multi millionaire comes to an end only to be lonely again and left stranded by Nikki.

Several stories go simultaneously in this movie. One gets to dig deep into Abhay‘s life. Played by the heart throb Naren Ahuja (Ajay Devgn) the fairly popular couple Ajay-Kajol in real life. Typical Bank Manager with a flat out on rent he has a crush on his new intern June Pinto (Shazahn Padamsee) but is too shy to tell her. Seeking a divorce from his wife, this is the best thing that can happen to his life. As conservative as he may be he does want to be caring towards June though. Hence he attends her party invites, joins her friends often, saves them from the police when they get in trouble, listens to her and often shares a bottle of wine with her, not to forget the dinners. He looses her to her mate Chris.
What happens in the house rented out by Naren? Well boy talk. Abhay, Naren and Milind (Omi Vaidya) often share life experiences. Milind gives up on his lady love when she finally gets her dream career of being a movie star and does not pursue her career as a Radio Jockey anymore. While Milind is heart broken to loose out on her and his savings (the hard earnings from his work as a matrimonial agency executive) that he spends in her making, he takes it all well. Few tears and the men are gone to Goa only to find 3 new ladies! Life goes on!
One may say it is all hopelessly hopeless. Failed relationships, lack of wealth, broken marriages the movie is full of it.
