Movie review: Badlapur – "Revenge is all about Passion"

(kj) There are two aspects about Sriram Raghavan’s ‘Badlapur’ which was screened during the 12th Indian Film Festival in Stuttgart, Germany. Raghavan’s film would surely appeal even to those who haven’t seen it yet.

Firstly, the title is a marvelous wordplay incorporating both meanings of the Hindi word ‘badla’: revenge and change. And of course, it is in no way a coincidence that Raghu’s (Varun Dhawan) choice falls on a Mumbai suburb of Badlapur after he lives through the devastating events of that unfortunate day in Pune. Secondly, the soundtrack and particularly the first song „Jee Karda“ is the perfect accompaniment to two hours charged with deep rage and infinite energy.

The stroke of fate caught Raghu unawares. His wife Misha (Yami Gautam) and their son Robin fall prey to a bank robbery going astray. Liak (Nawazuddin Siddiqui) and his friend Harman (Vinay Pathak) use Misha’s car to flee after collecting the booty. Robin falls from the moving car and Misha gets shot by Liak. Harman manages to escape and Liak is sentenced to 20 years in jail. Throughout his prison term Liak doesn’t reveal the name of his partner. However, an opportunity to be released prematurely changes the course of events and thus begins the time of ‘badla’ for Raghu.

Rage in all its facets reveals itself piece by piece, as we follow the tactics of Raghu’s revenge. Varun Dhawan surprises the audience with an accomplished performance, presenting a mature approach and displaying a wide range of emotions: from a caring husband and father to a cold and heartless avenger. The character of Nawazuddin Siddiqui sparks off a set of ambiguous feelings: he is indeed a murderer and a lecher, but nonetheless charming in his almost childish naivety. ‘Badlapur’ will capture your breath for the most part of the film, whereas it depends on your personal approach towards justice whether you find the ending satisfying. After all, revenge is all about Passion.
